SUNDAY JUNE 14

Trees Florida 2009 begins on Sunday June 14th with our OPTIONAL Tree Academy offering a selection of four outstanding all-day sessions, each dedicated to a single topic. We are confident that you will find one or more of these in-depth topics to meet your needs.

Tree Academy 1– The Verdict Is In - Arborists and the Law (ISA, FNGLA, SAF CEUs)
This comprehensive class will teach you how to avoid costly law suits and how to avoid judgments if unlucky enough to be sued. This class will be taught by 3 experienced attorneys, one real estate professional,  and one very savvy consulting arborist.

Instructors: Joe Samnik; Joe Samnik and Associates
Theodore “Ted” Karatinos, Esquire; Holliday, Bomhoff &
Karatinos, P.A.
John Grant III, Esquire;
 Grant Law Firm
Robert Gill, Esquire; Ruden McClusky, P.A.
Shawn Wilson, MAI; Wilson Real Estate, Inc.

Tree Academy 2 – Pests of Trees and Shrubs  (ISA, FNGLA, SAF and FDACS CEUs) This all-day indoor and outdoor class will teach you how to identify and treat common and not-so-common diseases and pests of trees, palms and shrubs.  Florida has also been inundated with new pests and diseases. Our expert instructors will address these and discuss treatment methods.  Ample Question-and-Answer time will be allotted for your individual questions and problems.

Instructors: Dr. Michael Raupp; Professor, University of Maryland
Dr. Jason Smith; Assistant Professor, University of Florida
Dr. Monica Elliott; Professor, University of Florida
Dr. Doug Caldwell; Landscape Entomologist, University of Florida

Tree Academy 3 – LAND-BASED Urban Forestry Field Study(ISA, FNGLA and SAF CEUs)

.
Urban Forestry By-Land:
This module will take you by foot and bus to explore urban forestry options in downtown, commercial, residential and developing areas.   More specifically, you'll hear about new technology and options that facilitate urban canopy in constrained spaces, as well as how to plan the urban forest for the highest return on social, economic and environmental benefits.

Instructors: Demetra J. McBride; Urban Forestry Manager, Sarasota County
Todd Kucharski; Deputy Public Works Director, City of Sarasota

Tree Academy 4 – WATER-BASED Urban Forestry Field Study
(ISA, FNGLA and SAF CEUs)

.Urban Forestry By-Water:
You're not just a landlubber - complete urban forestry management for economic and environmental benefits of the urban forest depends on your "coastal-perspective", too...   especially in waterfront communities like those that line the roughly 1400 miles of Florida’s coastline. The urban forest plays a critical role in water quality, stormwater runoff moderation and filtration as well as provides coastal security against erosion through estuarine and mangrove systems. The first part of this module will take place on the water from an engine-powered boat where coastal specialists will discuss planning urban watershed forestry, covering planning for communities, policy and wildlife. After a shore-lunch, you'll switch to kayaks to get up-close-and-personal with the rich and productive ecosystem that our mangrove forests provide. This module will be hosted by specialists and biologists from the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
